Jolanta Kwaśniewska’s Foundation "Communication without Barriers" decided to actively engage in activities to educate women how to care for their own lives. It is not shame to get ill with breast cancer, but it is shame not to give yourself a chance to live!
Mareco Poland, the center of opinion and market research and a member of Gallup International Association, in July 1999 held the nationwide survey of a group of women, of which 65% said, that during the last year they have been confronted with information about mammography. According to them, sources of information are mainly doctors – about 46%, TV – 31% and women’s magazines – about 38% of all respondents. This information could be optimistic but the fact is that only one third of the 65% group believes that women should do a systematic mammography examinations.
Breast Cancer, the most common cancer among women is 17% of all cancer cases. The risk of getting ill with breast cancer increases with age, and the earliest disease detection, at the current medicine development, gives the most certainty of being completely cured. With the habit of self-control, the monthly breast examination by women themselves and through widespread access to mammography screening and diagnostic procedures (ultrasonography, MMG, biopsies), the chances for a women to „make it before cancer” are increasing.
Campaign "You can make it before cancer" operates under the Foundation auspices and with the participation of companies involved in the issues connected with fight against cancer was a learning project, which aimed to raise awareness among women after 20 to have the regular breast self-control. It lasted from October 1999 to March 2000 and transformed into rapidly running program.
In this program, a few second advertisement spots were created, in the whole Poland cities on the streets there appeared large sized boards promoting breast self-examination. In health clinics, doctors’ offices, hair and beauty salons, billboards were hung. From leaflets and advertisements in magazines women could get know details about breast cancer and ways to fight against it.
According to the program, which was aimed to fight against breast cancer, there were 15.053 women examined and dozens of urological examinations for men. The Foundation spent 458.067,11 PLN on the mammography itself.
